the SubZ Refrigerator

When we bought the house, it came with this cute little 20 year old refrigerator.  We knew it had to go in the new kitchen, so in September, 2002, George found a low-miles SubZero in the want ad.
We got it delivered here and it sat in the living room.   We had no intentions of trying to cram it into the kitchen before we remodeled... so it just sat in the living room, teasing and taunting us...
So George finally said, what the hell, and started chopping away at cabinets to make the refrigerator space bigger.  He had to widen the opening by 13".  In this picture, you can see where he cut the counter.  The cabinet underneath had a drawer in it, which he also disassembled and rebuilt.
And when he got done, it almost looked deliberate.  The upper cabinet is a little tight (like 7" wide), but it works good for vitamins and aspirins.
Then we rolled it in from the living room.  To avoid destroying the oak flooring, we had to put down temporary plywood sheets to roll it on.  But, no problem- it only weighs 500 lbs (and all the weight is in the top, where the compressor is)
Here it is, almost in the kitchen
Because it's so top heavy, you actually have to attach the top of the refrigerator to the wall...
And here it is, power hooked up, ready to go..!
The other cool thing about this unit is that it takes a full-overlay door.  We don't have the doors yet, so George got a 4' x 6' whiteboard and ripped it down and used it as temporary front panels.  Now we use it for our shopping list and everything- we'll certainly miss it when we get the real doors..  ;-)
