The city of Como sits at the southern end of Lake Como. It's fairly close to the Swiss border. We took the train up to check it out. HERE's MJ waiting for our boat at a little coffe bar. |
|
Como is a small town and pretty touristy. You can see the beginning of the Alps in the background. |
| Predictably, they had a good sized duomo (church) on the central square. |
| To cut down on the maintenance, they sealed some of their statues in glass...! |
|
We also found our perfect store there- |
| They also had these cute little paddle boats shaped like cars- the girls would have loved them! |
| On the "Rapido" boat to Bellagio (all the boats are milk-runs; the hydrofoil gets it done in 45 minutes; the other boat is 2 hours...) |
| We soon arrive in Bellagio (and it looks nothing like the one in Vegas). |
| Except for tourism, there's very little industry here- just a beautiful little town, well preserved. |
| Of course, it had it's share of stairs... |
|
Then we went looking for a Wine Bar that Rick Steves recommended. One local told us that guy had died a couple of years ago, but we should try this place instead. We did and it was great! |
|
This bar was tiny! It was converted from an old ice cave. Turns out, years ago, they used to shovel snow into this room thru a hole in the ceiling, then pack it all in real hard and it would cool stuff for them well into the summer..! |
| Now they just serve great wine and cheese and ham here- this was a great find! |
| After another quick boat ride, we wound up in Varenna- not much to see here, but we can catch a direct train to Milan... or can we? HERE's George waiting for the train- it never came. We ended up on a later train to Lecco, then on to Milan- oh, well. |
