The Cinque Terra consists of 5 small villages on the Italian Riviera. There's a hiking trail that connects all 5; we did 3 of the 4 segments and visited: We ran out of gas before Monterosso- maybe we'll see it next time ;-) |
A couple of locals were fishing down there. To join them, go down these steps- |
| but don't say you weren't warned... |
Some of the trail is carved into the rock cliff, and the rocks are still falling. In spots, they've erected barriers like these to help protect hikers. |
| Another local custom- boys bring their girlfriends here to profess their undying love and seal the deal by closing a lock and throwing away the key...! |
There are lots of ways to get down to the water- check out these stairs. [ed- the local building inspector wouldn't be happy with the lack of handrails here...] |
| Typical Cinque Terra trails. Mostly all stone steps, pretty rough, you have to watch every step... |
| The view from Corniglia looking north- totally excellent! |
HERE's the boat we took back to Riomagiorre. It doesn't run in the rough weather because it doesn't really dock... |
Instead, they run it nose in towards the dock, loop a rope around a post, stuff it into reverse right before they crash and roll out the gangplank. We went on a calm day and it was rocking and rolling- I can't imagine it on a rough day..! |
