New Master Bath

The last major project inside the house was to replace the master bathroom.  It needed-
  • another sink
  • new cabinetry
  • pocket door to bath
  • new tile everywhere; and
  • a new sliding glass door.
Last view of 60's vanity...!
Our buddy Dave van der Schaaf came over and framed some of the changes for us.  This view shows the extra 2 feet of space we added to the vanity top...
The last shot of the exposed wiring... it only took us 3-1/2 years to get this done...!
Once we plastered and painted the dressing/vanity area, we turned our attention to the bathroom.  First project here was to cut a big hole in the side of the house and install a new sliding glass door...!
Here's the bathroom before knocking down the wall.
Here's the other side of that wall, where the door is going to go.  Note that we've already poured the concrete walkway where the door's going to open..!
...and then Mr. Sawsall gets it all done.  This only took about 10 minutes to do.  However, when George went to install the new door, there was a problem, Houston.  Seems the thin aluminum sill plate on the new door wouldn't support any weight, so we had to extend the slab by an inch...!
...and (predictably) it wasn't all going to get done that day.  So George nailed up this plastic to hold us until we fixed it the new day.  Little did he know there was going to be a 50 mph windstorm that night.  No damage done, just kind of noisy and disconcerting...
The next day was clear (thankfully!) First we had to jack-hammer up a chunk of the foundation; then drill holes and add rebar; then pour concrete on the whole mess.  When the concrete was almost set, we installed the new frame and doors...
AND, some finished views of the old master bath.  The single bowl vanity became a double bowl corian counter top...
The thing we fussed over the most was the backsplash- we ended up getting 16 x 16 porcelain tiles; then cutting them into strips and getting the edges beveled just to get this look...
We finally installed the closet doors; big thanks to ma's dad Joe-Pa for hanging them!
The new marble shower, courtesy of Dave van der Shaaf- nice job, Dave!
The bathroom itself got cleaned up quite a bit- here's the view from outside the new slider.
And the exterior view.  With matching trim and paint, you hardly know it wasn't put there by Eichler himself!
