AV System

Overview
Except for the playroom, all AV Components are mounted in the rack downstairs and everything is controlled by IR-Repeater technology.
An IR-Repeater system works the same as any Infra-Red remote control system; it simply picks up the IR signal and amplifies it and re-transmits it to all the other components in the system.
To drive the system, simply grab the proper remote and point it at one of the Kustom controllers- they look like this-
Multiple remotes are required to use this system.
The first remote you'll use is the Sony AV System remote.
Point it at the Kustom controller and select the audio/video source-
To use: Press:
Tivo Video1
DVDs LD
CDs CD
SpyCam
(video camera in girl's room)
TV
VCR Video2
To turn the system off, point it at the Kustom controller and press the SYSTEM OFF button- this shuts everything down!
Tivo operation
The tivo is used for viewing live TV (via the satellite) and for viewing previously recorded shows.
After selecting Video1 with the AV System remote-
For live TV- press the GUIDE button, then use the arrow buttons to navigate around and press SELECT to watch something.
For recorded stuff- press the LIST button, then use the arrow buttons to navigate around to whatever you want to watch; then press SELECT
Notes-
do not use the power buttons on the tivo controller; it stays powered on all the time.
if you attempt to record something and the tivo tells you it has a conflict with something else, please ask us before discarding our previous record request.
the tivo should have plenty of room on it- please don't delete anything
Fast Forward and Reverse have 3 speeds- 3x, 20x and 60x. The first time you push it, a 60 second commercial takes 20 seconds; the second time, it takes 3 second and the 3rd time it takes 1 second.
REPLAY does an 8 second rewind- terrific for seeing a football play again…!
you can PAUSE live tv and use all the fast forward controls (or replay stuff or whatever…)
the VOLUME button on the Tivo works for all audio and video sources.
DVDs
We have a bunch of DVDs in a DVD Jukebox in the basement.
After selecting LD with the AV System remote-
Make sure it's started- after you press LD, you should see a "Sony DVD" splash screen; if not, press the ON/OFF button once and wait 10 seconds; repeat until a screen shows up.
Make sure the MODE switch is set to DVD EXPLORER (the middle position)
Press the DVD button to display a list of all available DVDs
Use the MOUSE to scroll thru the list
Press the center of the MOUSE to select a DVD
Follow the on-screen instructions to play the disk.
VCR
Our VCR is in the playroom downstairs.
The kids typically use it to watch Thomas or Blues Clues.
If you select Video2 with the AV System remote, you can watch whatever tape is being played downstairs.
But you can't control it from upstairs- you have to go down to the playroom to drive it…
CDs
If you run the Windows Media Player on the kitchen computer, you can listen to anything in our CD collection.
It will play on all of the speakers in the house.
The Master controller is on the wall next to the kitchen computer- you can control what's playing throughout the house and the volume from that controller.
The individual controllers in each room control the built-in speakers as follows-
Controller Room
Dining Room Dining Room
over TV in family room upstairs hallway
on wall in playroom downstairs hallway
shop shop
If you select CD with the AV System remote, you can listen to the output of the Media Player thru the speakers in the Family Room.
