Zuni

On 3-dec-05, Zuni's 10 year residency at AHR came to a close.  She was diagnosed with bone cancer in early October and we chose not to amputate.
By December, the meds weren't very effective any more and she was in constant pain and we knew it was time... god speed, old friend...

Our memories of Zuni include-
  • She loved to swim to the point where she would hurt herself. At AHR parties we would have to lock her in our bedroom to prevent her from going in the pool after she had been swimming for hours. The next day she often could barely walk =)
  • She definitely grew on people. When she originally went to live with Caky and Joepa she was not well received. By the end, later she was sleeping on the couch with her puppy crown and eating frosty paws. She was known as “Shmupp” and “Puppy Girl”
  • She had some strange physical idiosyncrasies – if you scratched her butt in the right place she would stick out her tongue; at times her head would “heat up” and we would joke that she was “thinking”.
  • She LOVED riding in the car and would cry and whine almost the entire time the car was in motion. She loved having her head out the window.
  • She flew on airplanes more than some people, flying from 1. From New Mexico to California, 2. From California to Massachusetts and then 3. From Massachusetts back to California.
  • She was not shy about exerting her authority on occasion. She fought with Lady, Pete, Caesar and the dog up the street in Carlisle on the last day we lived there. She was also responsible for the only time in 27 years that the police went to Caky's house because she ran up and surrounded the “shnoodle”. Apparently this was quite a funny scene! Overall she was very protective of her “pack”.
  • In Thanksgiving 2004 we were reading books on the kids’ bed when Zuni walked in carrying the leftover Turkey carcass in her mouth. We assume she wanted to “share” this find with her pack. Luckily most of the meat had been stripped off already =)
  • She had “separation anxiety” starting from the moment we adopted her at 2 years. It got better later in her life because we were at home more due to the girls.
  • zuni front view HERE'S Zuni when we first got her.  She's a Heinz (mixed-breed)  with lots of German Shepard in her.
Here's Zuni on her L.L. Bean dog bed - monogrammed no less. She is a preppy! Zuni on dog bed
It took some training, but Zuni knows how to swim and dive. Here she is trying out for the low-board diving at the 2000 Olympics!
HERE she is getting acquainted with Caesar. Things were a little dicey at first, but now they're best friends and keep each other company all day.
At times, it's not as much fun as she would like...
...but she's definitely one of the us; and will be missed for a long time...
