MJ 30th BDay

For MJ's 30th George and MJ decided to bag California and go to sunny Hawaii for a golfing vacation.  It was a blast!  We spent the first week on the garden isle of Kauai and the second week on the Big Island of Hawaii - it was awesome!  Here are some of the pictures from the trip...

kauai1.jpg (48466 bytes) Even though we golfed a lot, we took one day off from golfing to hike the Naapali coast trail.  Its 2 mi up and down - here we are at the 1 mi mark!
The whole trail was in a tropical rainforest and was gorgeous..here's a stream running through the trail.
kauai3.jpg (25194 bytes)
kauai4.jpg (21206 bytes) This is the river we hiked down to.
Looking down to the beach. kauai5.jpg (14918 bytes)
kauai6.jpg (14495 bytes) George insisted on taking this picture!
There's a good reason this is called the Garden Isle - isn't this amazing? kauai7.jpg (17859 bytes)
kauai8.jpg (15469 bytes) The trail was really steep - here's MJ running down while George is taking a rest!
Here's the picture from the bottom of the trail...no wonder its rated, "Hearty Family!" kauai9.jpg (22712 bytes)
kauai14.jpg (32068 bytes) Well we had enough of the hiking thing and got back into golf.  Here we are at the hardest course we played, Princeville.
The club house here didn't suck.... kauai13.jpg (20233 bytes)
kauai12.jpg (8944 bytes) Princeville has a slope of 142 from the champion tees with a total distance of 6960 yards!  Believe it or not you can also play the Prince tees with a slope of 145 and total distance of 7309 yards!  MJ played from the ladies tees here...she wasn't stupid!
Here's George showing off his stuff. kauai11.jpg (9716 bytes)
kauai10.jpg (13261 bytes) Even though we had 40 over par scores and lost 5 sleeves of balls, we had a great time!
Another adventure (other than golfing) was a trip to the grand canyon of Kauai...Waimea Canyon. kauai17.jpg (11046 bytes)
kauai15.jpg (10016 bytes) It looks like a green version of the Grand Canyon - awesome!
kauai16.jpg (10274 bytes)
kauai20.jpg (14682 bytes) At the top is the Kalalau Lookout and its very close to the wettest place on Earth - with 390 inches of rain falling per year.  It was raining when we were there and really foggy.
This was the lookout after the fog went away.  Way off in the distance is the beach. kauai18.jpg (8638 bytes)
kauai21.jpg (8551 bytes) Well you know our heros couldn't stay away from the golf course for long...by the afternoon we were back hitting little white balls.  Here's George with a rainbow in the background.
On the last day in Kauai we   played the best course on the island - Kauai Lagoons.  Every hole has a marker like this at the beginning. kauai22.jpg (17156 bytes)
kauai23.jpg (11495 bytes) Well you know our heros couldn't stay away from the golf course for long...by the afternoon we were back hitting little white balls.  Here's George with a rainbow in the background.
Here's George hitting over a ravine 150 yards! kauai24.jpg (12995 bytes)
kauai25.jpg (17579 bytes) Here's the steep hill to the hole 5 par 3.  You go through the rainforest to get to the green.
Now there's a fairway bunker!   Jack Nicklaus designed this course and he is famous for his bunkers! kauai26.jpg (10867 bytes)
kauai27.jpg (11068 bytes) Throughout the course was this lagoon.  In this picture there are monkeys on the island.
Here's another club house that doesn't suck by our standards! kauai29.jpg (14632 bytes)
kauai30.jpg (18488 bytes) This is the signature hole at Kauai Lagoons - George made a great shot here!
Also the 16th signature hole...this is the green...you better not miss or your ball is going into the drink. kauai31.jpg (11594 bytes)
kauai32.jpg (10194 bytes) Here's MJ trying to get to the green - its over the water 140 yards!
Our Hawaiian adventure wasn't over yet - we flew over to the Big Island for another week of fun.  Here we experienced playing golf in gale force winds and next to lava rock! hi1.jpg (11699 bytes)
hi8.jpg (10891 bytes)
MJ displays the Kilauea crater. hi3.jpg (20118 bytes)
hi4.jpg (12023 bytes) This is the sign that we ignored to see the crater.
Throughout the park you can see when lava flows have covered the road. hi5.jpg (12871 bytes)
hi6.jpg (11101 bytes) Here's the crater from the visitor's center.

We had a wonderful time and didn't want to come home except to see the kids (Zuni and Caesar!)
