PODS

PODS stands for Portable On-Demand Storage.  They rent storage containers by the month and will even ship them cross-country.
We went with them when we moved out of Carlisle for 2 reasons-
  • they were less than half the $$$ that Allied wanted ($8500 vs. $20K!)
  • we knew we had to get into temporary housing and had to split out stuff in half- this was trivial to do with PODS- we put half our stuff in "cold storage" which went directly to their warehouse; and the other half was delivered out to us 2 days after we got to CA!

they also do local moves- we'll use them to move from our rental house into our permanent digs because for $200, they

  • drop a POD in my driveway
  • after i've filled it, they come move it to the next driveway
  • when i've emptied it, they come take it away.
and i get it for a whole month so no rush on packing/emptying!
These guys can put a POD anywhere- the secret is their "podzilla", the mechanized sling that they use to move it.

HERE's our second POD being delivered to us.  First they back the truck down close to where it's going.
Next they fire up the hydraulics and drop all the wheels and lift the POD clear of the truck.  As soon as that's done, they move the truck out of there.
the POD is easier to move if you lower the center of gravity, so they drop it back down again to prepare to drive it.
...and they just drive it to wherever it needs to go!  the 2 wheels closest to us are drones- they just spin free and support the weight.  the drive wheels are at the other end (and they can be driven independently, which is how they turn!)
so they're able to back it exactly to where it needs to be- the POD itself is 8' wide and they claim they need 2' on each side; so the POD can get stuff into any space 12' wide.
and here it is- installed- time to get it here- 6-8 minutes!
they did a terrific job engineering this thing- the frame expands and contracts in all directions.  And, as shown here, they even provided take-up wheels to avoid tangling the hydraulics- very smart!
in order to take the PODZILLA home again, they raise the back bar over the top of the POD and drive it away..!
... kind of like this!
then they simply collapse the frame onto the truck and they're gone!
